MEDINA M, Adriana  e  ESCOBAR B, Martha Isabel. NEURONAL PLASTICITY AND ITS RELATIONSHIP WITH THE GLUTAMATE TRANSPORTER SYSTEM. rev.colomb.psiquiatr. [online]. 2004, vol.33, suppl.1, pp.155-164. ISSN 0034-7450.

The central nervous system displays a notorious ability to modify its function and to a certain extent its anatomical structure in response to activity, environmental stimuli or injury. Plasticity is a constant process and it can be observed at different levels: synaptic, structural and in neuronal map organization. The fundamental role of the excitatory neurotransmitter glutamate and its receptors in plasticity has been recognized for a long time. However, the role of glutamate transporters and their relationship to plastic phenomena have been considered only in the last few years. This article reviews the main aspects of plasticity and its relation to glutamate transport.

Palavras-chave : GLT1; plasticity; glutamate; calcium binding proteins.
