Background: international investigations report a higher smoking prevalence among psychiatric outpatients than general population. However, research in Colombia has found similar smoking prevalence in both populations. Objective: to establish cigarette smoking prevalence among psychiatric inpatients. Method: This is a transversal study. Patients between the ages of 18 and 65 years were included. Diagnosis was confirmed using the structured clinical interview for axis I diagnosis, SCID-I. Patients who used cigarette everyday during the last month were considered smokers. Results: 132 patients were evaluated. Mean age was 40.3 years (SD 13.9), 51.5% were female, mean education was 8.3 years (SD 4.5). Diagnoses were mood disorders 75.6% and psychotic disorders 24.6%. Cigarette smoking prevalence was 18.1% (95%CI 11.6- 24.8). Multivariate analysis showed association between smoking and psychotic disorders (OR 3.25, IC95% 1.20-8.81, p=0.020). Conclusions: smoking prevalence among psychiatric inpatients was 18.2%. Smoking was more common in males who meet criteria for psychotic disorders.
