Objectives: To evaluate the knowledge of depressive disorders in primary care physicians and the effect of an intervention intended to improve the recognition and management of depression in primary care physicians in Bogotá. Materials and methods: Multicentre study. An educational intervention adapted to depressive disorders and specific needs and oportunities in the context of the provision of primary care in Bogotá, was applied to health professionals working with primary care outpatients of an EPS. Between evaluations, measures of outcome were applied by a test to measure the knowledge physicians’ had about depressive disorders before and two months after the training. The instrument was designed by the of group of investigators. The descriptive analysis of the variables and comparison of the results of both phases were controlled for different participant characteristics. Results: 48 physicians participated in the baseline evaluation and 23 health professionals attended the training, 18 of which were doctors. 16 doctors attended the evaluation two months afterwards. The average grade obtained before the training was 26.3 over 50 with a standard deviation (SD) of 6.69 for all of the participants. In the exam two months after the educational intervention, the average grade of the physicians that received training was 33.2 over 50 with SD 5.70. In comparison to the total grades obtained before (all of the participants) and after the training, there was statistically significant difference (p=0.003). Conclusion: Knowledge of depression in primary care physicians is deficient, these deficiencies improve by means of training in the recognition and management of depression.
