MORENO MANSO, Juan Manuel. Implications of Parental Psychopathology, Intergenerational Transmission and Toxic Substance Use in Child Abuse. rev.colomb.psiquiatr. [online]. 2005, vol.34, n.3, pp.355-374. ISSN 0034-7450.

Currently, programs and projects of child protection and attention confront the difficult task of providing solutions to each case of abuse without having certainty about the causes of each typology of child abuse. The aim of this article is to describe and interpret the results of a study carried out by the Municipal Institute of Social Services in the city of Badajoz (Spain). Our purpose is to determine the impact of three variables (parent’s mental health or the mental health of the person in charge of the child, intergenerational transmission and use of alcohol or drugs by the parents or caregiver) on five ways of child abuse analyzed (child abuse, physical neglect, emotional abuse, emotional neglect and inability to control the minor’s behavior). Furthermore, we carried out a comparative analysis between the different kinds of child abuse that make up the sample in the three variables studied. The sample consists of 107 families and 256 children. The results show a significant connection between some types of abuse and the parent’s mental health, intergenerational transmission and use of alcohol or drugs by the parents or caregiver.
