Abstract

CAMPO-ARIAS, Adalberto. Cigarette Smoking among Institutionalized Psychiatric Patients. rev.colomb.psiquiatr. [online]. 2005, vol.34, n.3, pp.395-404. ISSN 0034-7450.

Around the world cigarette smoking causes many preventable diseases and deaths. Smoking is more than a simple habit as many smokers meet criteria for nicotine dependence. Cigarette smoking prevalence changes according to the population being investigated. The prevalence of cigarette smoking among Colombian outpatients who meet criteria for mental disorders and the general population are similar, almost 15-18 per cent. Up to date, studies on smoking prevalence among patients dwelling in psychiatric hospitals are limited. Smoking is a complex topic in all populations. Some studies suggest that institutionalized patients deal with risk factors that increase the possibility of smoking. This paper explores these factors and summarizes general strategies for reducing cigarette smoking among these patients like forbidding smoking in hospitals, using low effective doses, and preferring medication with few side effects.

Keywords : Smoking; inpatients; mental disorders; institutionalization.
