Abstract

GONZALEZ CARO, César.   Future of Antidepressive Pharmacotherapy. rev.colomb.psiquiatr. [online]. 2006, vol.35, n.1, pp.50-60. ISSN 0034-7450.

Depression is a highly prevalent disease that generates great disability. The exact etio-pathogenic factors are not known yet, but diverse treatment types are available to relieve this pathology. One of them is the widely used pharmacological therapy. However, its delayed initial action, undesirable effects, drug interaction, as well as low rates of remission and response have represented a difficulty for its successful application. The action mechanism, based principally on monoaminergic transmission, does not differ significantly among the numerous medicines available nowadays. But due to advances in neuroscience, new disease mechanisms are known and discussed, and for this reason, new targets for therapeutic action are proposed in search of new molecules that can compensate for the aforementioned disadvantages.

Keywords : Depression; neuropeptides; psychopharmacology.
