Objective: The main objective in this review is to evaluate historic and cultural factors associated with filicide, with emphasis on maternal filicide and mental illness. Method: This is a literature review to establish the actual knowledge and different theoretical approaches to filicide. Results and conclusion: Filicide is a shocking event that occurs in all cultures, as an isolated or systematic act. Interpretation of filicide is specific for the culture. Only in recent years filicide has been a subject in the psychiatric literature.
