Introduction: Schizophrenia and related disorders are chronic and disabling diseases in which superior cognitive functions are altered. Objectives: To present the most relevant aspects pertaining cognitive deficits in schizophrenia and perspectives about its treatment. Methods: Review of the relevant literature. Results: In the last decades strategies for the treatment of schizophrenia have shown progress and among them, cognitive-behavioral therapy has been helpful. Studies are not definitive, but results are promising when the therapist uses a wide array of strategies in the development of skills and competencies fostering autonomy in the patient and reduction of symptoms.
