Objective: This paper aims to describe the diffi culties and possibilities of forging links between psychoanalytical theory and practice. Development: Some of the aspects that diffi cult the establishment of those links are: Lack of agreement about the place of psychoanalysis as a science, lack of agreement about psychoanalysis’ common ground among psychoanalysts regarding technique as well as theory, exaggerated increase of theory compared with technique, lack of agreement about the need to validate theory and the methods for such task, different theoretical models -some comprehensive, some explanatory, and diverse infl uences on technique not stemming from theory. Besides, there is the methodological and epistemological bias produced by the passage from a unipersonal psychology (metapsychology) to an intersubjective or interpersonal one. Results: Proposals are made related to psychoanalysis’ location as a science, validity of the analytical theory, the common ground and linking technique and theory. Conclusions: The longed for linkage between technique and theory is not possible to the expected degree and theoretical models must be differentiated between models for implementing (in practice) and models for thinking.
