Abstract

FRANCO LOPEZ, Jorge Augusto. Cerebrovascular Disorders and Depression. rev.colomb.psiquiatr. [online]. 2007, vol.36, suppl.1, pp.92-100. ISSN 0034-7450.

Introduction: Cerebrovascular disease and depression exhibit a bidirectional relationship since numerous fi ndings show that persons with cerebrovascular disorders have a larger incidence and prevalence of depression compared to population without the disorders. Also a large number of studies have shown that depression is an independent risk factor for both cardiovascular and cerebrovascular disease. Objective: To review the bidirectional relationship between depression and neurological disorders. Method: Clinical differences between post-stroke depression and primary depression were found and compared. Conclusions: Depression in patients with neurological disorders continues to be underdiagnosed. It is important to shift the focus and view depression as a cerebral disease and not just as a response to adverse life situations.

Keywords : Depression; depressive disorder; cerebrovascular disorders.
