Abstract

RAMIREZ ORTEGON, Luis Alberto. Confidentiality: Norms and General Considerations about its Application in Colombia. rev.colomb.psiquiatr. [online]. 2009, vol.38, n.1, pp.177-184. ISSN 0034-7450.

Objectives: To review and comment on the norms currently in use supporting the right to and respect of confidentiality. Method: A search was carried out of the laws and pertinent sentences regarding confidentiality in national and international legislation. Conclusions: The law supports the doctor that decides to preserve professional secrecy, except for those situations in which the obligation to preserve life prevails. It is the patient himself who is entitled to professional secrecy and it is the doctor who should help him preserve this right.

Keywords : Confidentiality; privacy; legal liability; enacted statutes.
