Abstract

RUEDA-JAIMES, Germán Eduardo; DIAZ-MARTINEZ, Luis Alfonso; LOPEZ-CAMARGO, María Teresa  and  CAMPO-ARIAS, Adalberto. Validation of a Brief Version of the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale (CES-D) in Colombian Adults. rev.colomb.psiquiatr. [online]. 2009, vol.38, n.3, pp.513-521. ISSN 0034-7450.

Objective: The aim of this study is to establish de criterion validity and internal consistency of a brief version of the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale (CES-D) in adults from Bucaramanga, Colombia. Methods: A validation study with a cross sectional sampling was designed. 266 adults were evaluated independently and blindly with the CES-D scale and the Composite International Diagnostic Interview for axis I disorders from the DSM-IV. The items with a lower association with the clinic diagnostic of major depressive disorder were excluded from the scale. A brief version of 7 items was obtained on which Cronbach's alpha, factor analysis, ROC curve analysis, best cutoff point, sensitivity, specificity and concordance were calculated. Results: Cronbach's alpha was 0.79 and the area under the ROC curve was 0.92. For a cutoff point of 8 the sensitivity was 93.2%, specificity was 77.5%, Cohen's kappa was 0.5, and a single factor explained the 77.5% of the variance. Conclusion: The brief version of the CES-D Scale is as useful as the original; moreover, it has a better psychometric performance. It is necessary to study the reproducibility and validity of this brief version in other Colombian populations.
