Abstract

RESTREPO, Jorge Emiro. A Turing Machine with a broken tape: Theoretical and Empirical Validity of Mental Representations in Cognitivism. rev.colomb.psiquiatr. [online]. 2011, vol.40, n.3, pp.545-562. ISSN 0034-7450.

Introduction: This paper reviews the epistemological and ontological context in which mental representations arise within the cognitivist paradigm. The logical structure of the representations is analyzed according to the computational model of mind. Objective: To review and discuss the theoretical difficulties of representations as they are conceived by the cognitivist program. Method: After presenting some of the most important empirical findings in the study of visual perception, the most serious problems faced by the explanatory system of cognitivism are brought to light and discussed. Conclusions: It is argued that the concept of representations used in the cognitivist paradigm is unsustainable within current neuropsychological theory.

Keywords : Cognitivism; mental representations; philosophy of mind; philosophy of cognitive psychology.
