ZAPATA ALBAN, María del Pilar  y  GALARZA IGLESIAS, Ana Milena. Description of a population with intellectual disability, across domains of health and domains related to health, towards a process of labor inclusion. rev.fac.med. [online]. 2013, vol.61, n.2, pp.39-45. ISSN 0120-0011.

Background. The aims of the research project "Description of a population with intellectual disability, across domains of health and domains related to health, towards a process of labor inclusion" are to provide an integrated view of the person, grounded in the biomedical and social model of health, and to identify the development of a person with intellectual disability bearing in mind the immediate environment and the society in general. Objective. To provide an integrated view of the person grounded in the biomedical and social model of health and to identify the development of a person with intellectual disability bearing in mind the immediate environment and the society in general. Material and methods. Fifteen people were described through an evaluation administered to them and an interview to their relatives. Both instruments were designed under the parameters established by the International classification of functioning, disability and health (WHA54.21). Results. The results show a predominance of a health concept centered on problem, alteration, and disease classifying this view into a medical-biological model and consequently, focusing on disabled people's deficits, where the actions are aimed to find the person's adaptation to the demands and requirements of the society, on an individual and personal basis. Conclusion. This study concludes that the analysis focused on deficit limits the conceptualization of health status as a social phenomenon, because it ignores the complexity of the human being and the factors and conditions related to the activities, participation, and environmental factors that affect the performance.
