BECERRA-BULLA, Fabiola; VARGAS-ZARATE, Melier; SANCHEZ-ANGARITA, Jacinto  and  MADIEDO, Nohora. Predominant cognitive style in college students of Medicine. [online]. 2014, vol.62, n.1, pp.55-61. ISSN 0120-0011.

Background. Cognitive style is a common way to process information and it is a conscious and stable individual that comes through in all tasks feature. Objective. The purpose of this paper is to define the main cognitive learning styles of medicine students of the Universidad Nacional de Colombia, with the aim of identifying the link with the cognitive skills required in the academic program. Materials and methods. A descriptive observational study in a cognitive approach defined the students. The field independence-dependence theory was also used. Besides, a documentary analysis to identify the main cognitive style and the defined profile for the degree was also done. Results. 7.5% of the students were classified as field-independent students; meanwhile 30.5% of the students were classified as field-dependent students. The sensitive or field-dependent students said they practiced arts activities before getting into university, they hardly ever got computers and internet, they highlighted and made summaries as study strategies and they thought that master classes were a benefit for their learning. On the other hand, an opposite behavior was found in the field-independent students. Conclusions. The field-independent cognitive style predominated in the medicine students. Those students got skills such as be sensible, analytical and creative, and these skills were included in the objective of the student formation.
