Background. Other methods, apart from the periodic tests for ascertaining undergraduates/graduates' knowledge, are required for assessing the quality of higher education. One way of assessing the role of research is by referring to scientific production which has been indexed in scientific databases. Objective. Evaluating the level of Colombian medical schools' scientific production by consulting their output in journals indexed in the Scopus database. Materials and methods. This was a descriptive, retrospective cohort study based on records taken from the Scopus database from 1940-2013. Results. 43,112 documents in the aforementioned database were Colombian affiliated; 12,153 (28.1%) were concerned with medicine. Six universities accounted for 75.77% (n=32,670) of all Colombian documents and 69.9% of those published in the medical field. Public universities had produced more than half of all documents in both the database and the medical field (i.e. Universidad Nacional de Colombia, Universidad de Antioquia, Universidad del Valle and Universidad Industrial de Santander). The Universidad Nacional de Colombia was below the national average in terms of relative weighting regarding production of articles in the medical field compared to the university's total academic production (in terms of articles in Scopus). However, the absolute value of its production was second only to that of the Universidad de Antioquia. Universidad Nacional de Colombia production represented 28% of the Colombian total indexed in the Scopus database. Conclusion. It is worrisome the role on researching of the other 51 Colombian medical schools referenced in the SCOPUS database, as well as all the other universities which include within their missions that function.
