Background. Going to university changes students in a way which can influence their lifestyles and could also affect their health and nutritional status. Objective. Determining some first semester medical students' lifestyles. Materials and methods. The aforementioned students were surveyed to obtain information regarding their alcohol consumption, smoking habits, hours of sleep and self-perception of stress. Results. Nearly half the students slept for four to six hours and the rest of them slept longer. More than 50% of the students who worked slept four to six hours per day whereas about 50% of the students who did not work slept seven hours or more per day. Most students stated that they had not suffered stress before coming to university. The students who felt stress classified it as being low or average. 61.1% of the students did not drink alcohol; 42.2% of the 14-18-year-old males drank alcohol compared to 15.6% of the 14-18-year-old females who drank alcohol. 89% of the students did not smoke and 44% of the students who adopted this habit smoked occasionally. Conclusions. Some students had a pattern of having little sleep; most students interviewed stated that they did not become stressed, more than 50% of them did not drink alcohol and most of them did not smoke before coming to university.
