Background. Research inside social observatories has led to the resources optimization by bringing out useful information to databases. This allows the teamwork to track, evaluate and reformulate public policy in accordance to the influence of the observatory in government decisions. Although it is an important topic on social studies specifically for observatories; there is not enough documentary information that supports the relevance of internal investigation in these organizations. Objective. The present study describes the experience of an observatory of food and nutrition security from its establishment (2009) until 2012 concerning the topic of research as line of action. Materials and methods. This is a non-systematic observational study executed from inside the observatory altogether with a critical review of public and private records, related to the management of food and nutrition security relevant to the purposes of the observatory in the region of Caldas, Colombia. Results. Research was in this case the main resource for knowledge producing. It also performed an important action keeping constant analysis of the detected problems among population about food and nutrition security, this analysis is constituted as the guiding principle for the re-formulation of public policy and; at the same time; it allows the observatory to monitor and design social programs as proposals of solution. Conclusions. Developing a correct investigation process in an observatory of food and nutrition, requires to start with precise questions in order to select the right methods. Moreover, it is crucial forming a group able to provide intellectual support and incentives besides to cooperate on logistic coordination with the objective of ensuring the pertinence and applicability of research.
