Introduction:

Regarding the quality of health delivery services in Colombia, a significant demand caused by legal obligations and the social environment can be observed; therefore, research and innovation within health institutions is a way to achieve goals.

Objective:

To review the development process of research and innovation in various hospitals in developed countries, Latin America and Colombia in order to learn and apply these experiences in the university hospital.

Materials and methods:

A systematic search was conducted in databases on leading research hospitals in the international, regional and local context.

Results:

The leading research hospitals are characterized by organizational changes that grant a significant role to research for their mission by building working teams that include clinicians and researchers of different areas of knowledge.

Conclusions:

Research is an essential part of the mission of a university hospital, considering that it should be developed based on the input obtained from various sciences and not only on health.
