Abstract

BECERRA-BULLA, Fabiola  and  VARGAS-ZARATE, Melier. Lifestyle of students admitted to a Nutrition and Dietetics program. Bogotá D.C., 2010-2011. rev.fac.med. [online]. 2017, vol.65, n.2, pp.233-237. ISSN 0120-0011.  https://doi.org/10.15446/revfacmed.v65n2.55786.

Introduction:

Several studies show that starting a university program is a defining moment in which the lifestyle of students becomes a risk factor for health.

Objective:

To identify the lifestyles of students admitted to a Nutrition and Dietetics undergraduate program.

Materials and methods:

Observational, descriptive and cross-sectional study in which a validated survey on alcohol consumption, smoking habits, sleep patterns and self-perception of stress was applied to students.

Results:

70 students participated in the study (79% women; 21% men). Over 50% of students were aged between 16 and 18 years. 56% of students slept 4-6 hours without significant differences regarding sex. The perception of stress was negative in 60% of men and in 64% of women. More than half of the sample (64%) did not consume alcohol before enrolling in the university, and only 5% reported smoking.

Conclusions:

The university environment can be considered as a risk factor for the acquisition of inadequate lifestyles that can affect the health and quality of life of the students.
