PAEZ-MOYA, Sylvia  e  VEGA-OSORIO, Pablo Alejandro. Risk factors associated with obstructive sleep apnea-hypopnea syndrome (OSAHS). rev.fac.med. [online]. 2017, vol.65, suppl.1, pp.21-24. ISSN 0120-0011.  https://doi.org/10.15446/revfacmed.v65n1Sup.59646.

The progress achieved by sleep medicine regarding respiratory sleep disorders have made knowing and understanding the pathophysiological mechanisms that favor their appearance possible, and have also helped to determine the anatomical, morphological, population, demographic, racial and syndromic risk factors.

Knowing the risk factors associated to sleep disorders allows to develop therapeutic measures focused on their origin. Modifiable factors such as overweight/obesity, smoking and consumption of central nervous system depressants are especially important since prevention of these conditions may have an impact on the prevention of the onset of the obstructive sleep apnea-hypopnea syndrome.
