Abstract
GUTIERREZ, MIGUEL. What an Other Other?. Ideas y Valores [online]. 2008, vol.57, n.136, pp.101-110. ISSN 0120-0062.
Lévinas is one of the most important thinkers of the 20th century and, perhaps, the philosopher who has attempted to think of difference most seriously. In this effort, he encountered the limits of language itself, as well as the difficulties it poses for thinking the other, difference, outside the concept which encloses the universe of sense in a totality. Lévinas centers his ethical ideas on the figure of the other and is extremely cautious; perhaps the (permanently open) totality of his work is no more than the effort to circumvent the impossibility he faces when affirming the other not as the other than myself, but as the other qua other. The purpose of this essay is to try to comprehend that radical other, preserving its outside, its "beyond", without enclosing it within the totalizing frontiers of the concept.
Keywords : Radical other; an-archy; infinite; Same; Other; totality.
