The objective of this article is to show the difference traced by Schopenhauer between philosophy and religions in relation to the limits of language. First of all, it examines the difference between religions, which aim at satisfying the metaphysical aspirations inherent in human beings, and the philosophy of science, which seeks to reveal causal relations among phenomena. It also shows that the limit for concepts is the phenomenal world, for which reason a metaphor or a negative characterization is required in order to express a reality beyond phenomena. Finally, the paper concludes that the distinction sought is that between the "prudence" of philosophy and the "boldness" of religions, given that the latter present sensu proprio what can only be expressed sensu allegorico.
