Abstract

RIVERA-NOVOA, ÁNGEL. INTENTIONAL HOLISM AND THE PROBLEM OF COMMUNICATION. Ideas y Valores [online]. 2018, vol.67, suppl.4, pp.61-76. ISSN 0120-0062.  https://doi.org/10.15446/ideasyvalores.v67n4supl.73373.

Intentional holism accounts for intuitive features of our mental life, but it does not explain how communication among agents is possible. Accepting partial holism or intentional molecularism in order to solve the problem involves the distinction between analytic and synthetic judgments. The article proposes that it is coherent to uphold molecularism, the rejection of the analytic/synthetic distinction, and the possibility of communication. It points out the methodological problems of Brandom's arguments in favor of the consistency of the three theses, and proposes two criteria that identify the capacity of a beliefto individualize the content of other beliefs without appealing to the analytic/synthetic distinction.

Keywords : Brandom; communication; analytic/synthetic distinction; intentional holism; molecularism.
