Abstract
GARZON-RODRIGUEZ, CARLOS ANDRÉS. ELEMENTS FOR A THEORY OF DEGREES OF JUSTIFICATION. Ideas y Valores [online]. 2018, vol.67, suppl.4, pp.77-92. ISSN 0120-0062. https://doi.org/10.15446/ideasyvalores.v67n4supl.73087.
The article presents the bases of a pragmatic, contextualist, and inferentialist strategy to articulate a theory that accounts for the degrees ofjustification of our assertions. It argues that some contexts of utterance of assertions are created with certain inferential criteria for practical or theoretical purposes. Thus, different standards of justification arise in those contexts. Finally, on the basis of a characterization of types of propositions, inferences, assertive commitments, and justification schemes, the paper shows how to determine whether the degree ofjustification is high, medium, or low with respect to a given context of utterance of assertions.
