Abstract

SARABIA-GOMEZ, Ana Milena. Zonification of damage caused by significant historical earthquakes in Bogotá (Colombia). Bol. geol. [online]. 2025, vol.47, n.2, pp.125-142.  Epub Sep 16, 2025. ISSN 0120-0283.  https://doi.org/10.18273/revbol.v47n2-2025006.

This paper presents a review of historical earthquakes that have significantly affected Bogotá (Colombia), specifically those evaluated with an intensity ≥VII on the EMS-98 scale which indicates damage ranging from moderate to destructive in the most vulnerable buildings. The objective is to contextualize, classify, and highlight patterns of repetitive damage, which may suggest local effects. To achieve this, it was necessary to search for, gather, and analyze historical data related to urban planning, architecture, and cartography of the city, as well as to conduct a new review of existing macroseismic reports. A total of eight earthquakes were analyzed, and for each one, the damaged buildings reported in the consulted sources were located on maps of the corresponding time period, and the degree of damage was determined in order to observe the distribution and zoning of damage throughout the city. This analysis made it possible to identify areas with repetitive damage, as well as those that have historically experienced the greatest impact, particularly the Historic Center and parts of the southern area of the city.
