Abstract

BRAVO-GRANDA, Byron; LEON-PERALTA, Angélica  and  SUCUNUTA-ORDONEZ, Lizeth. Weighting methodology of the geology variable for the use of multipurpose cartographic generation. Bol. geol. [online]. 2025, vol.47, n.3, pp.145-164.  Epub Nov 10, 2025. ISSN 0120-0283.  https://doi.org/10.18273/revbol.v47n3-2025007.

This research presents a methodological proposal to assess the geology variable in the development of multipurpose cartograph such as landslide maps, soil erosion maps, and other by weighting objective criteria that reduce the degree of uncertainty in analysis. The approach evaluates factors that determine the heterogeneity (e.g., texture, fracturing, climate) of rock types and surficial deposits. The methodology enables the estimation of a Geological Factor (GF) through four components: 1) lithological resistance, 2) fabric and/or texture type, 3) degree of fracturing, and 4) degree of weathering. These components are interrelated using cross-matrix methods to derive three indices: 1) lithological index, 2) fracturing index, and 3) weathering index. The method was applied to the Guayllabamba geological map sheet (1:25,000 scale) in Ecuador, yielding medium to very poor GF values, mainly due to depositional environments of volcanic, alluvial, and other unconsolidated materials outcropping in the area. The use of appropriately scaled geoinformation and accurate assessment proved to be key.
