Resumen

ESPINEL, CARLOS et al. Preformulations for control of the whitefly Bemisia tabaci (Hemiptera: Aleyrodidae) under laboratory conditions . Rev. Colomb. Entomol. [online]. 2008, vol.34, n.1, pp.22-27. ISSN 0120-0488.

Abstract: The whitefly Bemisia tabaci is an economically important insect due to its worldwide distribution, the damage it causes and the great variety of crops it affects. In Colombia, biological control with biopesticides is emerging as a promising alternative for integrated pest management programs. For this reason, the objective of the present work was to develop and evaluate preformulations based on native entomopathogenic fungi against B. tabaci. Different substrates were evaluated for mass production of the isolates Bv 056 of Beauveria bassiana, Pc 013 of Paecilomyces sp. and Vl 026 of Lecanicillium lecanii. A solid cereal-based substrate was selected because of its higher yield and easy manipulation with a conidia production of 1x109 conidia/g. The active component of the biopesticide, constituting the conidia separated from the culture medium, was microbiologically and physically characterized. The effect of the preformulations was evaluated under laboratory conditions against second instar nymphs on bean plants by spraying a concentration of 1x108 conidia/mL of each isolate. The greatest percent efficacy was produced by the B. bassiana preformulation with 96.5% mortality 14 days after inoculation, followed by the preformulations of Paecilomyces sp. and L. lecanii, with 81.8% and 70%, respectively.
