Abstract

PARAMO, PABLO. PSYCHOSOCIAL CONSTRUCTION OF IDENTITY AND SELF. rev.latinoam.psicol. [online]. 2008, vol.40, n.3, pp.539-550. ISSN 0120-0534.

The aim of this article is to develop the concepts of "identity" and "self" from the transactions between individuals and his/her psychological, social environments, and also from culture and scientific disciplines, particularly psychology. It is argued that identity and self are not inherent to the subject but socially constructed by cultural elements such as language, scientific disciplines and other kind of ideological discourses. As concepts, identity and self are extended from the individual to the physical and social environment. Putting the emphasis on the individual-environment transactions it is proposed to study these traditional philosophical concepts from an empirical perspective. The paper questions the possibility of an authentic self.

Keywords : self-concept; self perception; self-monitoring.
