Abstract

GODINEZ, Daniel E; DIAZ, Arnulfo H  and  GALLO, María del C. Larval development index and survival of the blue shrimp Litopenaeus stylirostris (Stimpson, 1871) fed with different concentrations of Chaetoceros calcitrans (Paulsen).. Rev Colom Cienc Pecua [online]. 2005, vol.18, n.1, pp.27-33. ISSN 0120-0690.

Nutritional tests with blue shrimp Litopenaeus stylirostris larvae were carried out using different concentrations of the Chaetoceros calcitrans algae (30000, 60000, 90000 y 120000 cél/ml), in addition to an established concentration of 10000 cel/ml of Tetraselmis suecica algae and six freshly hatched Artemia franciscana nauplii per ml. The period of test began from sub zoea 1 stage and concluded up to the appearance of misis 3. The larval development index (LDI) and survival were evaluated for each test. There were not significant differences for LDI between treatments (p>0.05). On the other hand, the greater survival was obtained in the concentration of 90000 cel/ml of C. calcitrans (92.65%), and significant differences between the treatments were found (p<0.05). The results of the present study suggest the importance of a suitable provision of C. calcitrans in the larvae diet for L. stylirostris, to assure a high survival.

Keywords : larvae nutrition; live feeds.
