ATENCIO-GARCIA, Víctor J; PARDO-CARRASCO, Sandra C; BARRERA CRUZ, Ur A  e  MARTINEZ TIRADO, Efraín C. Effect of stocking density in the rearing of dorada (Brycon sinuensis) fingerlings. Rev Colom Cienc Pecua [online]. 2006, vol.19, n.2, pp.197-203. ISSN 0120-0690.

This study was conducted to investigate the effect of stocking density in the rearing of dorada (Brycon sinuensis Dahl, 1955) fingerlings. At the Fish Culture Research Center at the Córdoba University, Montería, Colombia, were stocked dorada post-larvae (PL) at 2 days after hatch, with total length to 8.0 mm (TL) and body weight to 6.3 mg (BW), in nine 50 m2 earthen ponds involving three stocking densities (50, 100, 150 PL/m2). The PL were fed twice daily with artificial food of 34% crude protein. The ponds were sampled at days 0, 6, 12 and 18 to evaluate growth. It was estimated length gain, weight gain and weight-specific growth rate (G). Final yield was estimate to final biomass per area (BA) and final number of fingerlings per area (FA). Water temperature, dissolved-oxygen, pH and transparency readings were taken daily. Total hardness, alkalinity and total ammonium were measured five days each. The present study showed than water quality parameters ranged normal values to rearing neotropical fishes. The mean values of TL and BW ranged from 30.3 mm and 357.5 mg (150 PL/m2) to 37.5 mm and 743.9 mg (50 PL/m2). The survival rate ranging from 59.9 (150 PL/m2) to 85.4% (100 PL/m2). The mean G ranged from 25.1 (150 PL/ m2) to 28.9%/dia (50 PL/m2). The BA ranging from 22.2 (50 PL/m2) to 46.0 (100 PL/m2). Neither of the differences were significant (p>00.5). When PL were stocked to 100 PL/m2 (85.4 Ind/m2) and 150 PL/m2 (89.8 Ind/m2) the mean FA was no significant difference (p>0.05) but it was between 2.4 and 2.6 times more than when they were stocked to 50 PL/m2 (34.0 Ind/m2). Based on the results from the study, is suggested that rearing of dorada fingerlings should be carried out stocking density to 150 PL/m2, because the growth and survival were no different when stocked to 50 PL/m2, but it is obtained higher final number of fingerlings per area.
