Abstract
RUIZ, Jhon D et al. Characterization of coagulation parameters in Colombian creole horses from Valle de Aburrá (Antioquia province). Rev Colom Cienc Pecua [online]. 2010, vol.23, n.3, pp.359-367. ISSN 0120-0690.
There is a lack of reliable information on blood clotting parameters for Colombian Creole horses, which compromises the diagnosis, treatment and prognosis of those diseases that affect coagulation in this species. The main objective of this study was to characterize blood clotting parameters in Colombian Creole horses from Valle de Aburrá, through the use of field and lab tests such as Coagulation Time (CT), Bleeding Time (BT), Prothrombin Time (PT), Thromboplastin Partial Time (TPT), and Platelet Count (PC). Sample size was calculated by conducting a pre-test using seven horses. The sample size required was 162 animals for the platelet count and at least 43 animals for the other tests. Animals were divided into 6 groups according to their reproductive stage. Results for normal blood clotting parameters were PT: 11.46 ± 0.085 sec; PTT: 37.26 ± 1.83 sec; BT: 2.08 ± 0.11 min, CT: 8.44 ± 0.39 min, PC: 333.998 ± 33.778 plat/ μl. There were no statistical differences among reproductive stages.
