Abstract

ALONSO GAMBOA, José Octavio  and  REYNA ESPINOSA, Felipe Rafael. COMPILACIÓN DE DATOS BIBLIOMÉTRICOS REGIONALES USANDO LAS BASES DE DATOS CLASE Y PERIÓDICA. Rev. Interam. Bibliot [online]. 2005, vol.28, n.1, pp.63-78. ISSN 0120-0976.

Traditionally, in order to know about scientific production in Latin American countries, bibliometric data has been harvested using mainly international databases where Latin American journals are scarcely represented. At the National University of Mexico -UNAM-, two regional databases: Clase and Periodica, have been systematically compiling data from author’s affiliation of each article indexed since its creation in the mid seventies. Both databases compile information from a selection of Latin American journals with a multidisciplinary coverage. Currently, this data represent a critical mass that allows knowing about the scientific productivity of Latin American institutions as well as their works based on international cooperation. From the experience of producing these two databases a reflection is made about the importance of having regional databases, with a long lifespan, as well as the use of all the information compiled as a source to generate regional bibliometric indicators.

Keywords : Databases; Latin America; Bibliometrics; CLASE; PERIODICA; UNAM; Mexico.
