Abstract

GORBEA-PORTAL, Salvador  and  SUAREZ-BALSEIRO, Carlos A. Análisis de la influencia y el impacto entre revistas periféricas no incluidas en el Science Citation Index. Rev. Interam. Bibliot [online]. 2007, vol.30, n.2, pp.47-70. ISSN 0120-0976.

The purpose of this study was to determine the spheres of influence among a group of Latin American scientific journals in the field of library and information science that are not included in the Science Citation Index, by means of applying indicators that are not well distributed among the authors of this type of study, such as the Influence Index, that of Importance, and that of Relative Position in source journals. The use of these types of indicators and the methodology employed for this type of journal can be justified, owing to the high level of auto-citations and the low Citation Factor that are used as an alternative to the indicators proposed by ISI. This study used a sampling of eleven scientific journals indexed in INFOBILA (Información y Bibliotecología Latinoamericana), published in five countries in the region and identified as the most “productive” in this area of study. Final results affirm that, among the countries and the journals, there exists inbreeding; that there is a lack of recent studies in this area that deal with essential issues on a regular basis; that it is essential to foster the design of our sources as an alternative and complement to those maintained by Thomson ISI; and finally that there is a low visibility of scientific production in this region and this area of study.
