Abstract

CAMPOS MACHADO, Elisa  and  VERGUEIRO, Waldomiro. The practice of participatory management in areas where information is accessed: the case of public libraries and community libraries. Rev. Interam. Bibliot [online]. 2010, vol.33, n.1, pp.241-255. ISSN 0120-0976.

This article raises the possibility that public libraries can incorporate the principles of participatory management in their daily practices in order to improve and expand their relationship with their communities. It explains the complexity of participatory management in today's society and highlights the case of community libraries in Brazil where great social coverage has been achieved through their participatory management. It advocates for the creation of mechanisms that will guarantee community participation in the management of public libraries recognizing that involving local leaders in decision making processes requires an important cultural and behavioral shift.
