Abstract

LOZANO URBINA, LUZ AMPARO; MUVDI NOVA, CARLOS  and  MEJIA URIBE, LUZ DARY. Aloe barbadensis Miller GEL STABILIZATION AND BARBALOINA CONCENTRATION DECREASING BY ACTIVATED COAL PACKED COLUMNS ADSORPTION TECHNIQUE. Rev. ion [online]. 2011, vol.24, n.1, pp.61-67. ISSN 0120-100X.

Aloe vera (Aloe barbadensis Miller) belongs to the Aloaceae family; the most important issue of this variety is the presence of the secondary metabolites produced by this plant and its use on cosmetic and medical industry. The objective of this work was to obtain an Aloe barbadensis gel with a barbalonia concentration allowed by the International Aloe Science Council, and a high concentration of reducer sugars. This work is based on activated coal packed columns technique, changing the packing height and evaluated with different feed rates. The best results (final product with 10 mg/L barbaloina concentration) were gotten with a feed rate of 30 mL/min and an activated coal bed height of 23 cm. The quantification was developed by colorimetric and dinitrosalicylic acid method (DNS) analysis at 360 nm and 540 nm wave lengths for barbaloina and reducer sugars respectively. It was quantified the production of the metabolites aloine and aloe-emodine as well, by high resolution liquid chromatography; making possible to follow the aloine degradation to aloe-emodine, in treated and no treated samples. This results show a low influence of the stabilization treatment on the aloe-emodine content in the aloe gel, as it happens with the aloine, its precursor. The results obtained with this work show the efficacy of the technique studied (laboratory scale) for the aloe Barbadensis Miller gel stabilization, with aloine concentrations allowed by the Aloe Science Council; assuring the sugar aloe gel content.
