Abstract

The performance of the cocoa pod as adsorbent residual material heavy metals (Lead and Cadmium) in synthetic aqueous solution using a continuous fi xed bed system was evaluated. The experimental work was to determine the effect of bed height on the removal of these contaminants, keeping constant parameters such as pH, flow rate and initial concentration of metals. Adsorption tests showed a 91.32 and 87.80% removal, respectively, for Pb and Cd elapsed after 4.5h. Measuring concentrations in aqueous solution of metal ions was made by atomic adsorption. The adjustment of mathematical models evaluated Thomas, Dose-Response, Adams-Bohart and BDST (Bed-Depht Service Time analysis) was evaluated, to predict the dynamic behavior of the column and obtain the corresponding kinetic parameters. For models Thomas and dose response was observed that the values of the initial adsorption capacity, q0, decreased with increasing bed height, this may be due to a transfer slower mass, lower concentration and increased adsorption capacity, while models Adams-Bohart and BDST, volumetric adsorption capacity, N0, decreases with increasing column bioadsorbent. The results presented in this study indicate that cocoa waste can be used for the removal of heavy metals in waste water with satisfactory results.
