Abstract

ALBIS-ARRIETA, Alberto; LLANOS-REALES, Hellman; GALEANO-GIL, Jeffrey  and  GARCIA-MORENO, Daniela. Adsorption of methylene blue using cassava peels (Manihot esculenta) modified with oxalic acid. Rev. ion [online]. 2018, vol.31, n.2, pp.99-110. ISSN 0120-100X.  https://doi.org/10.18273/revion.v31n2-2018007.

In this work, it was investigated the potentiality of using cassava peel (Manihot esculenta) modified with oxalic acid for the removal of methylene blue from aqueous solutions. The best conditions of temperature (40-60 °C), time (1-3 h) and mass ratio oxalic acid/biomass (1.5-2) for the chemical treatment were studied. Removal percentages over 99.48 % and an adsorption capacity of 24.87 mg/g was obtained using modified cassava peel at 50°C during 2 hours and an oxalic acid/biomass ratio of 1.75. Removal process was best fitted to Freundlich isotherm model and pseudo second order kinetic model.

Keywords : cassava peel; methylene blue; oxalic acid; adsorption.
