Turbidity is a measure of the clarity of the water, related to the effect of the suspended material in reducing the passage of light through it. In the present investigation, the effect of a coconut shell or endocarp filter media (Cocos nucifera) was evaluated as a synthetic turbidity reducer for cloudy water, formulated with kaolin clay. A solution of 5000 mg/L of kaolin was prepared in water and then diluted to a turbidity of 100 NTU, and was passed through a filter packaged with the granulated coconut shell and measured for turbidity, total suspended solids and pH. Six different amounts of coconut shell were evaluated and the influence of this variable on the measured parameters (turbidity, TSS and pH) was analyzed. A regression analysis was applied for each every variable studied and the mathematical models that define the behavior with respect to the amount of coconut shell were obtained, as well as analysis of variance with α = 0.05, using the statistical package Statgraphics Centurion XVI.I. Results indicated that the coconut shell managed to remove up to 76.4% of the turbidity and 94.8% of the TSS, in addition nonlinear mathematical models were obtained, which relate the turbidity and TSS with the amount of filter media, with R2 > 0.90 and statistically significant with p-value < 0.05 in all cases.
