Abstract
CASTIBLANCO URREGO, Orlando and CARDENAS ROMAY, Dany José. Biobutanol production from beer bagasse through ABE fermentation in Colombia. Rev. ion [online]. 2024, vol.37, n.3, pp.27-41. Epub Nov 29, 2024. ISSN 0120-100X. https://doi.org/10.18273/revion.v37n3-2024003.
The article explores the feasibility of producing biobutanol from beer bagasse in Colombia through ABE (Acetone-Butanol-Ethanol) fermentation, using the microorganism Clostridium beijerinckii. To evaluate the process, information from various databases was reviewed, the availability of beer bagasse-mainly from Bavaria brewery-was analyzed, and scaling parameters were established, with a pilot plant design capable of producing 100 kg of biobutanol per month. Production involves the acid and enzymatic pretreatment of the bagasse, followed by fermentation and product separation through distillation. Costs were estimated in terms of infrastructure, operation, and labor, achieving a positive financial balance. The study suggests that a biobutanol pilot plant would be feasible in Colombia, given the local conditions of raw materials, technology, and biofuel market, offering environmental and economic benefits by reducing dependence on fossil fuels and improving industrial waste management.
