The article is a comparative study of two types of believer subjects: the followers of New Age alternative spiritualities and the followers of evangelical churches. The aim of the research was to identify the sociocultural factors that have an impact on the preferences of both type of subjects, which lead to a better understanding of the fact that Colombian population today prefers two forms of religiosity that are markedly contrasted and mutually exclusive. To analyze these different preferences, in-depth interviews among the two types of believers were conducted as well as ethnographic observations of both the religious practices and the social environment in which these persons live. The analysis included not only the beliefs of each type of spirituality or religiosity, but also factors such as community relations, origin, cultural capital, and acquired aptitudes of the subjects outside religious spaces. The article concludes that individualization is one of the key analytical categories to understand this distinction and that attitude towards authority has a significant impact on the preferences of the groups in question.
