The relations between the decisions and documents of Second Vatican Council with the peripheral archdioceses involved filters, interpretive lenses and choices that sometimes seem contradictory, revealing the complexity of an institution like the Roman church. In this article, this problem is studied, seeking to compare the process that took place in the Archdiocese of Goiânia, in central region of Brazil, with the general statements of Brazilian historiography. For this, a quick review of the approaches of analysis about the theme was initially made, and in second step, we pointed out that some stereotypes do not correspond to what happened in Goiânia during the sixties, especially observing the episcopal strategies in the management of transformations.
