Abstract

SANCHEZ HERNANDEZ, Francisco Xavier. Self-esteem and alterity. One refletion from Paul Ricoeur and Emmanuel Levinas. Franciscanum [online]. 2013, vol.55, n.160, pp.111-133. ISSN 0120-1468.

Abstract This article examines the brief epistolary dialogue between Emmanuel Levinas and Paul Ricoeur, shortly after the publication of the work of Ricoeur, Oneself as another, in which Ricoeur criticized Levinas the «lack of self-esteem» in the incorporation of the subject responsive to the other. To which Levinas is defended by reference to the category of «election». The fact of having been chosen by the other to respond arouse in me, did not foresee, a kind of esteem of myself, allowing me to discover me «other» of whom I believed to be at first. Brief epistolary dialogue between the two friends who were allowed into the center of his reflections on alterity.

Keywords : Self-esteem; election; alterity; Ricoeur; Levinas.
