Abstract
AGUIRRE ROMAN, Javier. Habermas and the role of religion in the public sphere: the case for liberal eugenics. Franciscanum [online]. 2016, vol.58, n.166, pp.49-85. ISSN 0120-1468.
Abstract The main objective of the research, from which this text derives, was to determine the strengths and weaknesses of Habermas' proposal on the role of religion in the public sphere. These assessments are based on the viability of Habermas' perspective to analyze a concrete debate developed at the Colombian Congress (the debate on same-sex marriage). This papers aims to illustrate Habermas' proposal with a particular discussion in which Habermas himself participates, that is, the discussion on genetic engineering, cloning, liberal eugenics and preimplantation genetic diagnosis. For this part of the research we used a reconstructive methodology insofar since the objective was to present a critical analysis of Habermas' arguments. The paper concludes, thus, by expounding a critical perspective of Habermas' view in which we show that his arguments are not coherent with other fundamental elements of his philosophy.
