Abstract

PEREZ JIMENEZ, Miguel Ángel. Understanding Forces and Attitudes. Notes for a Wittgensteinian Contribution to Hermeneutics. Franciscanum [online]. 2017, vol.59, n.167, pp.51-76. ISSN 0120-1468.

The aim of this paper is to introduce some of the main contributions from Wittgenstein's latter work to Philosophical Hermeneutics. We take into account the classical distinction between psychological attitudes and its propositional contents, and between illocutionary force and propositional content. We argue that Philosophical Hermeneutics is a good theory of content interpretation. Nevertheless, Hermeneutics has no resources to deal with the interpretation of Psychological Attitudes and Illocutionary Forces. We propose that Wittgenstein's remarks on the common behavior of mankind are a good source to understand how hermeneutics can face the problem of attitude and force interpretation.

Keywords : Philosophical Hermeneutics; Illocutionary Force; Psychological Attitude; Propositional Content; Wittgenstein.
