RAMIREZ GIRALDO, César Augusto e CEBALLOS MARIN, Jacinto Arturo. Why should existence have meaning? Humanist reflections from Gabriel Marcel. Franciscanum [online]. 2024, vol.66, n.182, pp.3-3. Epub 25-Jun-2025. ISSN 0120-1468. https://doi.org/10.21500/01201468.7585.
This proposal of humanistic reflections on Gabriel Marcel's philosophy confronts us with the question of why existence must have meaning. Here, hope goes beyond a futuristic vision to become a wonderful opportunity to retrace past paths and embrace meaning despite human anxieties and frustrations. Thus, the search for meaning emerges as a priority -or perhaps an impossibility- where the relationship with others becomes fundamental in finding an answer. It is an existential constant: a question about life, which suffers and overcomes suffering, a life that lives and, through living, enables change and transformation. In the midst of despair, life is covered with a mantle of meaning for existence. With Marcel, we understand that the question is not merely about passing through the world, enduring things as mere consequences of our existence, but recognizing that everything that happens to us invites us to unveil, each day, a mystery -the mystery of being-without constantly resorting to despair when we struggle to find our place in existence.
