Resumen

RAMIREZ, Juan David et al. Cardiorenal anemia syndrome Cohort nested case-control study. Acta Med Colomb [online]. 2013, vol.38, n.1, pp.7-11. ISSN 0120-2448.

Introduction: Anemia and renal dysfunction are markers of severity in heart failure. These three entities form the cardio-renal anemia syndrome. Despite the prognostic importance of this syndrome, studies in our environment are scarce and it is important to know our epidemiology. Objective: evaluate the epidemiological characteristics of patients with heart failure syndrome and prevalence of cardio-renal anemia. Methodology: retrospective study that characterized 215 patients with heart failure and ejection fraction of less than 40% and its relationship to the presence of anemia and calculated creatinine clearance <60ml/min. Results: we included 215 patients with a mean age of 66.9 years (± 11.8). 63.25% were men; mean ejection fraction was 23.36 (± 9.2%). The mean hemoglobin was 13.34 g / dL (± 2.09) and creatinine clearance 55.9 ml / min. The most common comorbidity was arterial hypertension in 78.1% of patients followed by diabetes mellitus in 33%. The prevalence of cardio-renal anemia was 23.25%. There were statistically significant differences with respect to age, diabetes and ischemic etiology of heart failure, but not so for the ejection fraction, functional class, use of ACE inhibitors or ARBs. Conclusion: the prevalence of cardio-renal anemia in our population was 23.25% similar to that reported in the literature. Cardio-renal anemia syndrome is a novel therapeutic target to consider in the treatment of patients. (Acta Med Colomb 2013; 38: 7-11).
