ZAPATA AVILA, JUAN GUILLERMO. Discourses of Political Parties about Universal Suffrage and Political Participation in Antioquia, 1848-1854. Anu. colomb. hist. soc. cult. [online]. 2010, vol.37, n.2, pp.111-134. ISSN 0120-2456.
This article analyzes the political language of Liberals and Conservatives regarding universal suffrage, constitutionalism and characterization of citizenship in the mid-nineteenth century Antioquia. The paper reports a research process that focused on the analysis of the press, flyers and leaflets that disseminated these speeches. The text presents the discourses that denoted the fears of party elites faced with the inclusion of the popular sectors to exercise citizenship and strong religiosity in the defense of political institutions. To this extent, exacerbated languages can be seen that promoted universal suffrage as a distinctive feature of modern society, but, in turn, as dogmatic expression of each party seeking to impose its electoral strength. The article is divided into two parts: the first analyzes Liberal discourse and electoral dynamics of the period, while the second does the same with respect to the Conservative Party.
