Abstract

RODRIGUEZ JIMENEZ, PABLO. Bodies, Funeral Honors, and Hearts in the   Formation of the Colombian Republic. Anu. colomb. hist. soc. cult. [online]. 2011, vol.38, n.2, pp.155-179. ISSN 0120-2456.

This paper analyzes the importance that the funeral honors paid to the heroes of Independence had in shaping republican culture. On the basis of some case studies, it highlights an exceptional situation: the veneration of the heroes ' hearts. Bodies and relics served to enhance memory and patriotic sentiment. The clear purpose of funeral rituals, Masses, and prayers was to unite the nation and heal the wounds of the past.
