Abstract

GIEDELMANN REYES, MÓNICA J  and  JAIMES ALVARADO, LAURA FERNANDA. The Necropolis of the "Dogs". Anu. colomb. hist. soc. cult. [online]. 2012, vol.39, n.2, pp.217-238. ISSN 0120-2456.

The article describes the changes that the city of Bucaramanga went through in the last century, changes that were reflected in the Cementerio Universal (1910-2010, in order to portray the necropolis or city of the dead as a metaphor of the city of the living. To achieve this objective, a qualitative methodology was used, which combined research of historical sources (exhumation records, chronicles, and press reports) and analyses of material culture (tombs and other monuments in the cemetery). The study revealed inconsistencies in the political and religious discourses established at the time, and ultimately, led to the conclusion that the destruction of the legacy of the Universal Cemetery and of the practices of remembrance is responsible for its demolition. This action also reveals misconceptions regarding heritage on the part of the authorities of the city of Bucaramanga and the absence of a sense of belonging on the part of its inhabitants with respect to urban spaces.

Keywords : Bucaramanga; cemeteries; heritage; city; death.
